Resident Return Visas

Your Journey Begins with a Resident Return Visas

Australia’s Resident Return Visas (RRV) are essential for current or former permanent residents and eligible former citizens who want to maintain or regain their status when re-entering Australia. The most common RRV is the Subclass 155, which allows eligible individuals to travel in and out of Australia while retaining their permanent residency.

Permanent residency in Australia does not automatically grant unlimited travel rights. A permanent visa usually includes a 5-year travel facility, after which the visa holder must obtain an RRV to re-enter Australia as a permanent resident. Without an RRV, returning to Australia may not be possible, and permanent residency status could be at risk.

These visas are particularly important for those who have spent extended periods overseas and wish to retain or restore their residency rights in Australia. RRVs are also relevant for people who originally migrated to Australia but have since moved abroad and now want to return permanently.

Types of Resident Return Visas:

Subclass 155 – Resident Return Visa (5-Year or 1-Year)

→ For current or former permanent residents, or former Australian citizens.
→ Grants travel rights for up to 5 years if the applicant has lived in Australia for at least 2 years in the last 5 years as a permanent resident.
→ Applicants who do not meet the 2-year residency requirement but can show substantial ties to Australia (such as family, employment, or business ties) may be granted a 1-year RRV.

Subclass 157 – Resident Return Visa (3-Month)

→ Designed for people who have spent less than 2 years in Australia and have compelling reasons for leaving but want to preserve their permanent residency.
→ Grants a 3-month travel facility, allowing short-term travel with the intent to return and resume residency.
